I Used To Think There Was A God

I used to think there was a God.

The majesty of the design of our perfect earth seduced me.

the same earth that cradles our fragile existence,

the same earth that we casually dismiss with rash indifference.

I used to think there was a God.

The magnificence of our human design deceived me.

We are not divine; we are a species that hates one another.

Brains great enough to reason our hatred without hearts great enough to destroy it.

I shall hate you for not being me.

I shall harm you because you have no defense.

I shall oppress you because I want what you have.

Murder my enemy because it saves me.

Murder my neighbor because it furthers me.

Murder my friend because they fetter me.

Murder my family because it frees me.

Murder myself because I…am…foul.

Our greatness is not measured in the height of our skyscrapers or the speed of our computers.

The only time that our brains are used as intended is when they are used in perfect balance with our hearts.

I used to think there was a God, but the more I see the arguing, the abuse, the war, the sheer and utter rage, the more I know we are alone here.
